Sensei has been involved in martial arts for many years having commenced his training about 1970 in Kyushindo Judo. Today he holds the rank of 5th Dan with the title of Renshi in relation to self defence (Goshin Jutsu). This rank was awarded by Sai Ti Gung Timothy White, 8th Dan of the Molum Combat Arts Association, Indiana USA. He received his 4th Dan upon completion of a comprehensive examination in self defence systems by Sai Ti Gung White. That rank was then ratified by Shihan Andrew Morrell of the Cobra Martial Arts Association, United Kingdom.

In addition Sensei holds the rank of 4th Dan Judo, awarded by Kyoshi Andrew Millard BEM 7th Dan, and 1st Dan Hapkido and is the founder of Direct Self Defence and also Kyushindo Jujutsu which has been recognised by CMAA as a new western style of Jujutsu. In addition to training in Judo and Self Defence Sensei also trains in Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido.

Renshi Ray has been honoured by Sai Ti Gung White with the title of 'Master's Closest Student' or Yap Suk Dai Ji. Ray was also honoured by Master Bill Dixon as a member of the T’Ang Shou Society of Traditional Martial Artists.

Sensei has gained many relevant qualifications and presently holds in addition to the above awards certificates in First Aid, Child Protection Awareness, a CRB Enhanced Disclosure, Instructors Insurance and nationally recognised coaching awards, including the Award in Coaching Studies from 1st4Sport.
